Management

I am currently studying business management at San Francisco State University. I was a transfer student from City College of San Francisco. I choose this major because I didn't really know which path I wanted to go into. I was really into studying business because I felt I can someday be Warren Buffet or Bill Gates. By studying business, I can get a sense of what is happening in the world, the politics and the changes that are affected by business decisions. For example, I remember watching news and reading an article about Google getting pushed out of China. By studying management skills and concepts, I understand more about why Google made its decision in leaving the massive market of China. By studying business management, I will learn the necessary skills and concepts in management and someday lead me to become a manger. I also believed by studying management, its a way to better understand ourselves and people around us and build a good skill on empowering others and leading a team of people into a right path where it can provide benefits to the company. We also learn to connect with people from different cultures and think about how to negotiate with others around the world.

What I really wanted to do is yo study abroad in China and learn about its management style and perspective. Since I am bilingual in both English and Chinese, I have an better opportunity for myself to start my career in China. Even if there is not an opportunity in finding a job I would really like to use the skills I learned through these years of studying business management to start my own business in China and hope one day become a successful business man!

  1. Is there a certain field of business management that you would like to go into? Or is there a certain company that you want to work for? I also chose business management because it is something that will benefit me in the real world, no matter what kind of job I get. Do you enjoy the major after taking classes or is it still just a field that you stumbled upon?

    1. I haven't think about the field or a specific company I wanted to work for because I felt I am still a bit lost. However, I think studying management is like studying psychology. I really enjoy taking the different management classes in school.

  2. In a very competitive world it is beneficial to speak a second language. Studying abroad will solidify your resume because you will understand the social norms of the two biggest economies in the world. Management seems like a great fit for you because it is very broad and it gives you many options. The broadness of Management can also be its downfall, have you thought about minoring in a different subject?

    1. It seems that in any world it is beneficial to speak a second language. I was also wondering if the broadness of Management would be more harmful? Wouldn't it be better to pick a different subject that focuses on one skill instead of many?

    2. Yes, I have thought about minoring in the field of counseling because I think its interesting. Also, its really a helping profession, which to me it seems to be something I want to do.

    3. The broadness of management is not harmful because being a manager is to try to lead a team with people with skills you might not be good at and help the company you work for to profit.

  3. I think its a great idea to go back to China to look for management opportunities; however, some places in China especially Canton, Shanghai, Beijing, and Hong Kong, to name a few, are very fast-paced and stressful places to work at. Those places are unlike to San Francisco. You might be struggling to get use to their lifestyles, and you will be living by yourself.

  4. Management is a very interesting major to me! What can you do with a management degree? Are you working towards a position like CEO? What is your dream job with a management degree? Going to China and get a job there actually is not that easy nowadays. I think if you can find a job in an international company here in the U.S., and as the U.S. side’s management team member to work in China will be better. In international business, cultural impact to the global business is very important, and you know the cultural difference between Chinese and Americans, it will be easier for you to help your U.S. Company to develop their oversea branch in China.

  5. Basically, you can do a lot of things with an management degree. I am not looking towards in becoming a CEO because I feel its going to be a very stressful job but I am looking towards in one day becoming a successful manager. I totally agree with your point with developing a oversea branch for an U.S company because China is really growing fast.
